ENVAC GEARS UP FOR GROWTH AS PROJECT PIPELINE INCREASES

Envac, the UK’s only automated waste collection system (AWCS), has appointed another contracts manager as it prepares for what its General Manager claims will be the year of AWCS as multiple developments across the UK include the technology in planning applications.   Alex Sophocli joins Envac UK from EJ, the world leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of access solutions, where he was responsible for managing water utility projects to refurbish and upgrade existing water assets throughout Thames Water infrastructure.   Alex is responsible for assisting with the ongoing Envac rollout across Quintain’s Wembley Park site and supporting the current installation at Barking Riverside, which is expected to go live in April as tenants begin to move into the newly built homes.   The appointment comes as forthcoming sites in London, and even Hampshire and Buckinghamshire, opt to move away from traditional bins in favour of a waste collection solution that releases space, reduces waste collection vehicle traffic and improves the sustainability credentials of a development.   Dave Buckley, Managing Director at Envac UK, comments: “We’ve been communicating the benefits of AWCS over traditional bins for some time and now, ten years since the first system was installed in Wembley, we’re beginning to see the message resonate with local authorities and developers not just across London, but across the country.   “Developers now understand that the space saved by using an underground pipe infrastructure can be used for further commercial development and this, combined with the fact that fleets upon fleets of bins is no longer a feasible solution, is beginning to shift opinion towards a system that not only improves local environments, but also costs less to run than multiple collection trucks operating all day, every day. UK’S SECOND ENVAC SYSTEM TO CUT ON-STREET BINS BY 98 PER CENT IN NEW LONDON REGENERATION SCHEME

London is set to become home to one of the largest automated waste collection systems (AWCS) in Europe after Barking Riverside Limited, a joint venture between London & Quadrant (L&Q) and the Mayor of London, selected Envac to handle the waste of almost 10,000 homes at Barking Riverside London.   The move will see up to 460 Envac waste inlets installed instead of the 19,000 traditional bins that would have been required had AWCS not been selected – a reduction of almost 98 per cent in containers.   Two waste fractions, residual and mixed recycling, will be collected via the waste inlets, which will be conveniently situated near people’s homes. Once the inlets are full, or at pre-programmed emptying times, fans located at the collection station create a negative airflow, ‘sucking’ waste at speeds of over 40mph through a subterranean pipe network measuring 15km in length.   Each automated collection cycle for the entire 178 hectare site will take minutes as opposed to multiple waste collection teams and vehicles taking all day to empty on-street bins – a process that typically has a negative environmental impact.   Envac began installation work on the development in September. The first phase of the system, which will serve around 1,700 homes, will launch in 2019.   Matthew Carpen, Project Director at Barking Riverside London, comments: “Our sustainability-led ethos and commitment to making this a clean, green and pleasant area in which to live led us to this ground-breaking method of waste collection.   By integrating Envac and making waste collection one of the key environmental strands of Barking Riverside London, we’ve not only ensured that waste collection will operate sustainably and effectively, but also taken the carbon emissions and traffic safety aspects attributable to a constant flow of waste collection vehicles out of the equation.”   Barking Riverside London anticipates that the system’s inclusion will reduce waste vehicle-related carbon emissions by at least 90 per cent as multiple waste collection vehicles, each of which typically empties every bin, are no longer needed. Envac estimates that the system will replace hundreds of daily empties required to service 19,000 bins, made possible by having eight industrial vehicles running full time every day.   Dave Buckley, Managing Director of Envac UK, adds: “We are now beginning to see a huge shift in the way major developments tackle waste collection. Whilst Envac can be used as a way in which to free up space generally assigned to bin storage for further commercial development, such as building more apartments, Barking Riverside London has taken the decision to install it simply because they want to make the site as pleasant a place to live as possible. Sweden’s first BREEAM certified industrial building announced

  Envac’s waste collection station in the district of Stora Ursvik, just north of Stockholm, has become the first industrial building in Sweden to secure BREAAM certification after it received the coveted ‘Excellent’ rating – the second highest accolade in BREEAM’s programme.   BREEAM is the world’s leading sustainability assessment method for masterplanning projects, infrastructure and building. The BREEAM assessment evaluates the procurement, design, construction and operation of a development against targets based on performance benchmarks. Developments can receive one of five levels of certification including Pass, Good, Very Good, Excellent and Outstanding.   The waste of 4,500 apartments and a school in Stora Ursvik is collected by the 300 Envac waste inlets situated throughout the site and transported, via airflow, along a pipe network measuring 3km in length to the central waste collection station. Three waste streams including general waste, food waste and paper are collected through the system.   The collection station is located within a building enveloped by a 250m2 green wall containing 2,000 plants and over 20 varieties of grass and herbs. The living wall has ensured that one of the only aboveground components of the Envac system, which is able to significantly reduce the amount of space required for waste collection compared with traditional methods, blends seamlessly into the environment.   Tengbom, one of Scandinavia’s most prominent architectural practices, designed the Envac waste collection station on behalf of Sundbyberg municipality.   On securing BREEAM’s Excellent rating Stellan Fryxell, project architect of the building and sustainability manager at the architectural firm, comments: “In addition to enhancing the visual nature of the Envac waste collection station the green wall, which we wanted to compensate for the land used in building the unit, also extends the life span of the building, filters pollution and cleans the air around it. The overall design has many synergies with the sustainable nature of the Envac system and we’re delighted to be the architects behind Sweden’s first BREEAM certified industrial building and proud of the contribution we’ve made to Stora Ursvik’s urban realm.”   Since the scheme first launched in 1990 over 552,000 developments have become BREEAM certified. Bigbelly scores a drop goal in Rugby

Rugby Borough Council has reduced its annual waste collections by 49,591 in only 12 months after replacing 56 traditional bins with 23 Bigbelly smart stations.   Located within the birthplace of one of the world’s most loved sports, Rugby Borough Council was making two to three collections per day for each traditional bin, which amounted to 51,100 waste collections a year.   Since integrating Bigbelly’s smart stations on 6 October 2015 it now only makes 1,509 waste collections a year – a saving of 97 per cent.   Prior to the Rugby World Cup, the council conducted a review of its streetscene and concluded that its traditional bins would fail to manage the waste generated by the predicted influx of 40,000 people.   To compound the challenges associated with periodic surges in footfall, Rugby was the only venue in the UK during the Rugby World Cup with a ‘fanzone’ but that did not host matches. This meant that pubs, bars and other public venues were expected to rapidly fill up, placing pressure on the town’s waste collection infrastructure.   Sean Lawson, Head of Environment and Public Realm at Rugby Borough Council, comments: “For a long time now we’ve wanted to do things differently, yet couldn’t find the solution that could achieve what we needed without going over budget. Now that we’ve found Bigbelly, not only can we meet our own targets in tandem with improving the urban realm, but also save precious council resource in the process. Not too long ago we’d carry out regular waste collection ‘milk rounds’, regardless of whether the bins needed emptying or not, simply because we had a schedule to adhere to. These days, we’re notified when collections need to be made and can clearly see when bins don’t need emptying just by looking at a smart device or office computer.”   Busy parks and children’s play areas were also experiencing overfull bins, particularly over the weekends, which meant that waste collection crews were having to commit resource to making specific collections to only a handful of units. Using Bigbelly, the council no longer has to commit crews to making ad hoc and unplanned weekend collection trips as Bigbelly’s compaction technology buys time by increasing the bins’ capacity when required.   Mark Jenkins, Sales Director at Egbert Taylor Group, adds: “Shrinking resources at local government level is placing increasing pressure on local authorities’ waste teams, all of which are now required to achieve more than ever before with smaller budgets. Rugby Borough Council has demonstrated that by integrating smart technology, not only can councils make their waste budgets go further but also improve the sustainability credentials of their local environments.
